Someone with an 87.5 WAM, a research thesis, and no formal publications applied for the Monash Graduate Scholarship through the central university round. They were rejected.
Later, the same applicant received faculty-level funding.

These aren’t edge cases. They’re the pattern that emerges when you look at what applicants are actually experiencing — and they expose the gap between what scholarship announcements say and what the selection process genuinely rewards.

Is This Scholarship Fully Funded?
Short answer: not automatically, and not for everyone.
The MGS is primarily a living-cost scholarship. It pays A$37,145 per year toward your living expenses. What it does not automatically cover is tuition.
International students may have the MGS packaged alongside a Monash International Tuition Scholarship, which covers course fees and a single Overseas Student Health Cover policy. But that combination isn’t guaranteed — it depends on the offer.
Before describing any Monash scholarship offer as “fully funded,” check the offer letter carefully. Look for both the stipend award and the tuition-fee award listed separately. If only one appears, ask directly.
The Deadline Most Applicants Are Getting Wrong
This is the most time-sensitive fact in this entire article.
The 2026 Round 3 international deadline is 31 July 2026 — not August 31, as many circulating posts and older screenshots suggest.
Monash moved this round’s closing date forward. The round runs from 4 May to 31 July 2026, for candidates intending to enroll between January and June 2027.
Scholarship results for Round 3 are expected during the week commencing 11 October 2026, approximately six to ten weeks after closing.

What WAM Do You Actually Need?
Monash doesn’t publish a guaranteed scholarship-winning WAM. That’s deliberate — and it’s also the source of most applicant confusion.
Meeting the PhD admission minimum is not the same as being competitive for funding.
For PhD admission, the standard requirement is a relevant four-year bachelor’s degree with a substantial research component, at a level equivalent to Australian Second Class Honours Division A. A relevant master’s degree may also qualify if it includes a research thesis worth at least 25% of one full-time academic year.
For a Master’s by Research, the minimum is equivalent to Second Class Honours Division B, with a mark of at least 65.
Scholarship selection uses a different lens. Monash ranks candidates on academic excellence, previous research experience, and recognized research outputs. The Reddit cases suggest competitive outcomes vary considerably between faculties, available supervisors, and funding pools.
Treat your grades as the foundation. They get you into the competition. They don’t determine the outcome alone.
Do You Need Publications?
No universal rule at Monash requires journal publications for MGS eligibility.
Publications can strengthen an application. Monash also considers thesis work, research training, relevant employment, awards, and demonstrated capacity for independent research. The application system only allows candidates to include work that has been published, formally accepted, or is in press — not work in progress.
A candidate without publications can still be competitive when their honours or master’s thesis, research methods training, references, and project alignment demonstrate strong research potential.
That said, the Reddit cases make something clear: publications don’t guarantee funding either. One applicant with multiple degrees, a decade of experience, and several publications came away empty. The project fit and supervisor relationship appear to carry as much weight as the publication list.
Finding a Supervisor — Do This Before Applying
Most Monash faculties expect applicants to identify and contact a potential supervisor before submitting the formal application.
The application form asks for a preferred supervisor’s name, though candidates can indicate openness to alternatives. Faculty procedures vary, so the specific instructions for your intended academic unit take priority.
Why does this matter so much? Because scholarship selection isn’t based on grades alone. The proposed research must fit the faculty’s expertise, available supervision capacity, and active projects.
One recent recipient credited persistent supervisor outreach as the deciding factor in their case. They missed the central scholarship round but later received institute-level funding after building a relationship with a supervisor who had access to separate funding.
That’s not an exception. It’s a recurring pattern.
An Invitation to Apply Is Not an Offer
This point has generated consistent confusion in applicant discussions online, so it’s worth stating clearly.
An Invitation to Apply allows you to proceed to the formal application stage. It is not an admission offer. It is not a scholarship award.
Monash’s faculty guidance explicitly states that an invitation only confirms completion of the preliminary Expression of Interest stage where that process applies. The formal application still undergoes full academic, supervisory, admission, and scholarship assessment.
Do not resign from a job, decline another offer, or make travel arrangements because you received an invitation. Wait for the formal outcome.
IELTS and English Requirements
Applicants must provide complete, verifiable English-language evidence when submitting for scholarship consideration.
Some candidates can satisfy this through qualifying tertiary education taught and assessed entirely in English. Others must submit an approved test taken at an official centre, normally valid for less than two years.
Minimum scores vary by faculty:
- Arts, Business and Economics, Education, Law: IELTS Academic 7.0 overall, minimum 6.5 in each band
- Other disciplines may apply different thresholds — check your specific faculty requirements
One important distinction: Monash may issue a conditional English-language offer for admission-only applications in some faculties. It does not issue scholarship offers conditional on meeting English requirements later. English evidence must be complete and verified before scholarship consideration.
How the Application Works
New applicants submit their graduate research admission and scholarship application together through the My.App portal.
Eligible candidates are automatically considered for available centrally managed graduate research scholarships. You don’t select MGS separately as a standalone award.
A strong application includes:
- An explanation of your institution’s grading system
- Certified academic transcripts and degree certificates
- Academic CV (maximum two pages)
- Valid English-language evidence
- Details of at least two academic referees
- Evidence of publications, awards, and research experience
- Research proposal or faculty-required alternative
Faculty instructions take priority over general guidance. Some Science applicants, for example, develop their research proposal collaboratively with their supervisor rather than submitting a conventional standalone document.
