Emory University doesn’t work that way.
The Emory University Scholar Programs for Fall 2027 entry are open to first-year applicants from every country — and the only thing required to be considered is completing the standard admission application and answering yes when asked if you want scholarship consideration.

What the Scholar Programs Actually Are
These aren’t tuition discounts distributed based on grades alone.
Emory’s Scholar Programs are structured communities for students who combine strong academic ability with leadership, intellectual curiosity, and a track record of meaningful contribution. Selected scholars receive financial support alongside a set of ongoing academic and professional benefits throughout their time at Emory.
Benefits can include:

Scholarships are renewable for up to eight regular academic-year semesters, provided recipients meet the academic and program standards stated in their award conditions.
Two Paths: Atlanta Campus or Oxford College
Emory offers two Scholar routes for 2027 entry, each built around a different undergraduate experience.
Emory College Woodruff Scholars begin immediately at Emory’s Atlanta campus — a major research university environment with direct access to Atlanta’s hospitals, businesses, cultural institutions, and professional networks. Students who want full immersion in a large university setting from day one will find this track suits them well.
Oxford College Woodruff Scholars take a different path. Oxford College is a smaller residential campus where students spend their first two years before transferring to the Atlanta campus for junior and senior years.
Oxford works well for students who prefer:
- Smaller class sizes in the first two years
- Closer faculty relationships early in their degree
- More accessible leadership opportunities before the larger campus
- A structured transition rather than immediate immersion
Applicants can apply to Emory College, Oxford College, or both through the Common Application.
Is This Scholarship Fully Funded?
Honestly — it depends on the award.
Emory describes the Scholar Programs as offering partial-to-full merit-based scholarships. Not every selected scholar receives a complete full-cost award.
Three different outcomes are possible:

How Competitive Is Selection?
Around 10,000 students seek Scholar consideration each year. Roughly 175 to 200 are selected as finalists.
That’s approximately two percent of applicants reaching the finalist stage. The numbers are worth sitting with before applying — not to discourage strong candidates but to set realistic expectations about what the application needs to do.
A competitive application doesn’t read like a list of activities. It demonstrates a pattern: the applicant identified a problem or opportunity, took meaningful action, produced results that affected other people, and carries a clear sense of what they want to do next.
One sustained initiative with genuine results tends to be more compelling than a long list of clubs with no explanation of what the student actually contributed.

Who Has a Strong Chance
Emory doesn’t publish a minimum GPA or test score for Scholar consideration. Academic performance still matters significantly — finalists are drawn from among the strongest applicants in Emory’s admission pool.
A competitive applicant typically shows:
- Outstanding grades in a demanding curriculum
- Strong written communication
- Intellectual engagement beyond classroom requirements
- Sustained leadership or meaningful initiative
- Evidence of service, research, or community involvement
- Specific and credible letters of recommendation
- A convincing reason for choosing Emory
For international applicants, Emory evaluates grades in the context of each student’s school system, curriculum, and available opportunities. There’s no universal GPA conversion.
English Language Requirements
Emory Scholar consideration doesn’t carry a separate language rule, but international students must satisfy Emory’s English proficiency requirements.

Students educated entirely in English may be exempt but attending an English medium school doesn’t guarantee an automatic waiver. you have to check Emory’s current exemption rules before deciding not to submit a language test.
Early Decision or Regular Decision?
This question matters more for international applicants than most scholarship guides acknowledge.
Early Decision is binding. A student admitted through that route is generally expected to enroll — even if the exact scholarship amount isn’t known at the time of commitment.
Regular Decision gives you room to:
- Compare scholarship packages from multiple universities
- Wait for need-based aid decisions
- Understand the full cost before committing
- Arrange visa and family financial planning without pressure
Early Decision makes sense if Emory is genuinely your first choice and your family can accept the likely financial outcome regardless of the exact scholarship amount. For students who need substantial funding to attend, Regular Decision is almost always the safer path.

The process is straightforward — which is the point.
- Open the Common Application and select Emory College, Oxford College, or both
- Answer “Yes” to the question asking whether you wish to be considered for the Emory University Scholar Programs
- Complete the full admission application including personal statement, short answers, activity descriptions, and recommendations
- Submit all materials by your applicable deadline

Emory University Scholar Programs 2027
One thing worth understanding: the personal statement, Emory short answers, recommendations, and activity descriptions collectively become your scholarship materials. There’s no supplemental essay to rely on. Everything that needs to be said about your leadership, initiative, and impact has to come through the existing application components.
Applicants not selected as Scholar finalists remain under consideration for admission. They’re also automatically considered for smaller merit scholarships without any additional action required.
What Happens After You Apply
Admission and faculty committees review Scholar applications from approximately October through January.
Finalists are expected to be notified by the end of February. Finalist activities and scholarship decisions follow in late March.
Applicants based in the United States may be required to attend an on-campus finalist visit, with travel arranged at no cost to the student.
International finalists should follow the instructions in their notification regarding virtual participation, interviews, or travel arrangements — details that vary by applicant situation.
