Three Institutes, Three Cities, One Application
The program brings together three different Max Planck research institutes under one application process.
Max Planck Institute for Informatics is in Saarbrücken. It covers algorithms, computational geometry, computer graphics, databases and bioinformatics among other areas.
Max Planck Institute for Software Systems has two locations Saarbrücken and Kaiserslautern. Its research spans distributed systems, programming languages, operating systems and human computer interaction.
Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy is in Bochum. It focuses on cybersecurity, cryptography, privacy engineering and systems security.
Each institute runs its own research groups. When applying candidates can choose to pick the mentor or research group they want to work with. Picking carefully based on your academic background and research interests makes your application stronger and more focused.
What the Funding Covers
This is one of the more complete internship packages available to international CS students in 2027.

Visa support is worth highlighting specifically. Many international research internships leave visa costs and paperwork to the intern. Max Planck provides the necessary documents to support the visa process for selected candidates who need one to enter Germany.
Who Can Apply
The program is open to students worldwide at three levels:
- Bachelor’s students
- Master’s students
- Doctoral (PhD) students
A basic background in computer science is expected. Beyond that, the program is broader than most people assume.
Students looking to complete a bachelor’s or master’s thesis project are explicitly welcome — the internship can serve as the research base for a thesis, which is an option worth considering if your academic timeline aligns with a May-to-August placement.
Interdisciplinary applicants are also encouraged. Students whose work intersects CS with social science, economics, law, or humanities fall within the program’s scope. Pure CS backgrounds are not the only path in.
Currently enrolled students can apply. There’s no requirement to be between degrees or on a formal research break.
The Work Itself
Interns are embedded within a research group at one of the three participating institutes. Each intern is mentored by at least one faculty member throughout the placement.
This isn’t a support role or a shadowing arrangement. The expectation is active research participation — contributing to ongoing work, running experiments, writing up findings, and engaging with the group’s scientific agenda.
For students thinking about research careers or doctoral study, twelve weeks inside a Max Planck research environment provides a level of exposure to serious academic science that very few undergraduate or master’s programs can replicate.
No German Required
All three participating institutes use English as their working language.
Research, meetings, mentorship, and day-to-day communication within the institutes are conducted in English. Candidates do not need any German proficiency to participate in the program or perform effectively in their role.
Basic German is useful for daily life outside the institute — shopping, transport, local administration — but it’s not a requirement for the internship itself.

During the application, you can select the mentor or research group you would prefer to work with. This step is optional but taking it seriously improves your chances. Review the research group pages at each institute before applying and identify two or three groups whose current projects align with your background.
A generic application submitted without any connection to a specific research direction is harder to evaluate than one that clearly signals where you fit and why.
