Every year, thousands of applicants lose their Chevening application not because their essays were weak or their grades were low.
They lose it because they clicked the wrong button. Entered their work hours incorrectly. Failed the eligibility screening on the third attempt and got locked out for a full year.
Chevening is one of the most generous scholarships in the world. It’s also one of the most unforgiving application processes. Understanding both sides of that equation is what separates competitive applicants from people who have to wait another twelve months to try again.

What Chevening Actually Pays For
This is a genuinely comprehensive funding package — not a partial award dressed up as full funding.
Chevening covers:
- Full tuition fees
- Monthly living allowance
- Economy class return airfare
- UK visa fee (scholars are not required to pay)
- TB test reimbursement where applicable
- Additional UK grants for extra expenditures
- Cash card provided on arrival day
- Quarantine costs where applicable (when booked through Diversity Travel)
The living allowance is paid monthly and is calibrated to cover reasonable living costs in the UK. Combined with tuition coverage and flights, the scholarship removes virtually every major financial barrier to studying in Britain for a year.
One important clarification: Chevening funds one-year Master’s programs only. MPhil programs qualify. Anything shorter or longer than 12 months does not.
Who Is Eligible — And Who Is Not
Read this section carefully. Several eligibility rules catch applicants off guard.
To be eligible, you must:
- Hold citizenship of a Chevening-eligible country or territory
- Have completed an undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK upper second class (2:1) honours degree
- Have at least 2 years of work experience (equivalent to 2,800 hours) at the time of application
- Apply to three different UK universities and hold at least one unconditional offer letter
- Be prepared to return to your home country for a minimum of two years after completing the scholarship
You are not eligible if you:
- Hold British nationality or dual British citizenship (with limited exceptions for British Overseas Territory citizens applying from Hong Kong)
- Are currently in the UK under another UK government funding scheme
- Hold refugee status in a non-Chevening country
- Are a current or former employee of His Majesty’s Government, or an immediate relative of one
- Are a staff member of an Association of Commonwealth Universities member institution
One nuance on the partner organization rule: employees or relatives of Chevening partner organizations can apply — but they cannot receive a partner award from the specific organization where they or their relative works.
The Application Process for Chevening Scholarship 2027
Chevening uses an Online Application System (OAS). The mechanics of that system have ended more applications than weak essays ever have.
Before opening the form, know these:
The eligibility screening allows only three attempts. If you fail to answer the pre-screening questions correctly three times, your application is locked. You cannot resubmit until the following year’s cycle. Read each question carefully. Answer precisely. This is not the place to guess.
There is no autosave. Every session expires after 60 minutes. Save manually and frequently. Unsaved entries disappear when the session times out, with no recovery option.
Submission is final. Once you click submit, the application cannot be modified. One application per cycle, one submission per person. Your first submitted application is your only application.
Use a laptop or desktop on Google Chrome. The system is not optimized for mobile or tablet. Attempting to apply on a phone introduces formatting and navigation risks that aren’t worth taking.
Don’t use the browser’s back and forward buttons. Navigate only through the application form’s own menu. Using browser navigation can push you out of the system entirely.
The Four Essays — What Chevening Is Actually Measuring
The application includes four essay questions. Each answer must be between 100 and 500 words. Meeting that word count is a requirement, not a suggestion — falling short signals that you haven’t engaged seriously with the question.
Chevening’s essay questions are designed to assess leadership potential, networking ability, and commitment to returning home and making a difference. Reviewers read thousands of applications. Generic answers about “wanting to contribute to my country’s development” are recognizable within the first sentence.
Two things that will get your application rejected regardless of essay quality:
- Copying answers from other websites or published examples. The system checks for plagiarism. Applications flagged for copied content are disqualified.
- Repeating the same answer across different questions. Each question targets something distinct. Reviewers notice when candidates recycle the same ideas.
Write in your own voice. Be specific about your experiences, your goals, and why a UK Master’s is the right vehicle for what you want to accomplish.
Reference Letters — Two Required, Both Must Be Strong
Your application requires two reference letters. The British High Commission verifies their authenticity by contacting your referees directly. Letters from people who cannot be reached — or who clearly don’t know your work well — create problems in the verification stage.
Each reference letter should address:
- The referee’s full contact details (address, email, phone)
- How long they have known you
- In what capacity they know you
- When they last had direct contact with you
- A specific endorsement of your skills and suitability for Chevening
Choose referees who know your work in detail, can speak to your leadership qualities, and are reachable. A letter from a famous name who barely remembers you is worth less than a letter from a direct supervisor who can describe your contributions specifically.
Common Mistakes That Get Applications Rejected
These are the errors that appear most frequently — and most avoidably.
Work experience section errors. Enter your work hours accurately and realistically. Claiming 30,000 hours when the realistic figure is closer to 2,000 raises immediate flags. Calculate carefully before entering.
Entering the same experience twice. The work experience section is reviewed in detail. Duplicate entries are noticed.
Dual citizenship disclosure. Applicants who indicate dual citizenship during the application are rejected. If you hold dual nationality, check your specific eligibility carefully against the official rules before applying.
Choosing duplicate courses at the same university. You must apply to three different universities. Selecting the same course at the same institution more than once invalidates that selection.
Inconsistent course choices. Applying for three completely different subjects at three different universities signals uncertainty about your direction. Selecting the same program (or closely related programs) at three different universities shows commitment and focus.
University Applications — The Unconditional Offer Requirement
Chevening requires you to apply to three UK universities and secure at least one unconditional offer letter before your scholarship application can be fully processed.
A few things to keep in mind:
- The three universities must be different institutions
- The courses should ideally be the same program (or closely related) to demonstrate a clear academic direction
- An English proficiency certificate is not formally required by Chevening, but individual universities may require one before issuing an unconditional offer
That last point catches people late in the process. Even if Chevening doesn’t ask for IELTS, the university you’re applying to might. Start that process early — universities won’t issue unconditional offers without meeting their own English requirements.
