What the Scholarship Actually Covers
This is one of the most complete funding packages available for Commonwealth postgraduate students. It goes well beyond tuition.
Every scholar receives:
- Full coverage of approved tuition fees
- Return airfare between home country and the UK
- Monthly living stipend of £1,347 (standard)
- Monthly living stipend of £1,652 for scholars studying in the London metropolitan area
- Warm clothing allowance, where applicable
- Thesis or dissertation grant for eligible preparation costs

Single-parent scholars may also receive a family allowance:
- £590 per month for the first child

Applicants must be citizens of an eligible country, or have been granted refugee status by one, or be a British Protected Person. Permanent residence in an eligible Commonwealth country is also required.
Who Qualifies — The Academic Requirements
Meeting the country eligibility is the starting point. Academic eligibility has its own requirements.
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honours standard, or an equivalent qualification
- Be available to begin studies in the UK by September 2027
- Not already hold a UK Master’s degree (or provide strong justification if they do)
Applicants with a lower second-class degree are not automatically excluded. A relevant postgraduate qualification obtained since the undergraduate degree may satisfy the academic entry requirement. Check the CSC’s eligibility guidance for the specific conditions that apply.
Applying for funding toward a second UK Master’s degree is permitted but requires written justification explaining why a second qualification is necessary for development impact in the home country.
The Step Most Applicants Miss
Here is where many Commonwealth scholarship applications go wrong.
The scholarship is administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, but applicants do not apply directly to the CSC in isolation. Applications go through a nominating agency in each eligible country — typically a government ministry, national scholarship body, or designated institution.
Each nominating agency may have its own additional requirements, internal deadlines, and document specifications on top of the CSC’s standard process. In some countries, the nominating agency deadline falls weeks before the CSC’s October 20 closing date.
Check your country’s nominating agency requirements before anything else. Missing an internal agency deadline because you were focused only on the CSC deadline is one of the most common and avoidable reasons applications fail at the first stage.

The development impact statement deserves particular attention. This isn’t a generic personal statement about why you want to study in the UK. The statement should connect your proposed study directly to a specific development challenge in your country and explain what you plan to do when you return.
Vague statements about “giving back” don’t compete with specific, evidence-based arguments about development impact. This section often separates competitive applications from forgettable ones.
