What the Scholarship Covers
The award is structured to support the full cost of an approved master’s program, within government-approved rates.
Benefits include:

- Support for full-time or part-time study within Mauritius
- Support for selected full-time programs abroad
Two practical limits are worth noting upfront. For overseas study, the master’s program must be full-time and no longer than one year. Programs at recognized Mauritian institutions can be full-time or part-time and receive support for up to two years.
Medical specialization programs are excluded entirely.
The exact stipend amount is not stated in the official communiqué. Don’t assume every personal expense will be covered. Accommodation costs, visa charges, and insurance payments may fall outside what the award reimburses.
Who Can Apply
This scheme is reserved exclusively for Mauritian citizens. Foreign nationals are not eligible regardless of their academic profile or Mauritius ties.
To qualify, applicants must hold:
- Five SC or GCE O Level credits including English, obtained in one sitting
- Three HSC or GCE A Level subjects at Principal level, obtained in one sitting
- At least an upper-second-class bachelor’s degree or recognized equivalent
- Age below 35 on the application closing date
Alternative qualifications may be accepted if officially equivalent, but the burden of proving that equivalence rests with the applicant.
Meeting these thresholds confirms eligibility. It doesn’t secure an award. With only nine scholarships available, candidates with strong academic records, a convincing study plan, and programs aligned with government priority fields will have a meaningful competitive advantage.
You Must Already Have a University Offer
This is one of the most commonly missed requirements in scholarship applications of this type.
Applicants cannot apply with an intention to find a university later. A firm or conditional offer from a recognized institution for the 2026/2027 academic year must be submitted alongside the application.
For local study, the institution must be registered and authorized by the Higher Education Commission of Mauritius. For overseas study, the program must be formally classified at master’s level.
Preference is given to fields listed on the government’s Indicative Priority Fields of Study for 2025/2027. Applicants from outside those fields may still meet the general conditions, but priority-field candidates carry a stronger selection advantage.
Who Is Automatically Disqualified
The scheme is designed to fund a first master’s qualification. Several categories of applicants are explicitly excluded:
- Those who already hold a master’s degree or higher
- Previous recipients of any Government of Mauritius scholarship
- Applicants aged 35 or older by the closing date
- Candidates without a recognized master’s offer in hand
- Applicants for medical specialization programs
- Anyone who fails to submit certified documents by the deadline
The 500-Word Statement
Every applicant submits a statement of no more than 500 words. It must address four specific points:
- The objectives of the proposed master’s study
- Why the selected program is necessary
- How the degree will support the applicant’s professional development
- How Mauritius will benefit from the qualification
A generic personal statement about the university won’t be competitive here. The strongest responses connect the program directly to a specific national need, a professional sector, or a development priority relevant to Mauritius.
Given that only nine awards exist, the statement is arguably the most important document in the entire application. Approach it accordingly.
The Return Obligation
Recipients studying overseas must return to Mauritius immediately after completing their studies and work in either the public or private sector for at least two years.
Candidates studying locally carry the same two-year work commitment after completing their program.
This is a formal scholarship condition, not an advisory recommendation. Applicants who are considering emigrating or taking up opportunities abroad immediately after graduation should examine this obligation carefully before applying.
How to Apply for Mauritius Postgraduate Scholarship 2027
Applications must be submitted using the prescribed Ministry of Education form.
The complete application package includes:
- Completed application form
- Firm or conditional university offer letter
- Certified academic certificates (SC, HSC, bachelor’s degree)
- University transcripts and final mark sheets
- Evidence of qualification equivalence where required
- The 500-word study and national benefit statement
- Any other supporting documents requested by the Ministry
Applicants whose final degree certificate is not yet available may submit a provisional certificate, but only if it has been issued by a local public higher education institution.
Employed applicants must complete the form in duplicate — one copy to the Scholarships Section and one to their employer, so study leave and release arrangements can be considered in parallel.
