Fellowship Benefits

Eligiblity Criteria
To be eligible for the Kader Asmal program applicants must:
- Have strong English proficiency for university-level study.
- Pick three master’s courses from the approved list.
- Not have applied to the Ireland Fellows Programme more than once before.
- Demonstrate leadership potential and dedication to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
- Live in South Africa when applying.
- Be prepared to start your master’s in Ireland for the 2027-2028 school year.
- Not already be doing or have finished a master’s degree.
- Have at least two years of related work experience.
English Language Requirements
Irish universities require formal proof of English-language proficiency, and there are no blanket exemptions from institutional admission standards.
If you are shortlisted through Stage 1 but don’t yet hold a recognized English test result, you may be asked to take the Duolingo English Test during the selection process. Where a chosen university or program does not accept Duolingo, shortlisted candidates may need to sit an IELTS examination in January 2027.
Before finalizing your three program choices, check the English proficiency requirements of each one. Choosing a program that requires IELTS when you only hold a Duolingo score — or vice versa — creates complications that are avoidable with ten minutes of research upfront.
