UCLouvain is not running a large cohort program with rolling intake. Fifteen researchers will be selected from an international pool spanning every country and every academic discipline. UCLouvain Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows receive a tax-exempt postdoctoral fellowship lasting between one and three years, depending on the approved project duration.
The funding package includes:
- Social security contributions
- Insurance coverage
- A research operating budget
- Access to UCLouvain laboratories, academic resources, and research networks
One practical gap in the official announcement: separate payments for airfare, visa costs, accommodation, or family relocation are not clearly confirmed. The Mobility Rule — Read This Carefully
Eligibility has one condition that catches applicants off guard, and it has nothing to do with nationality.
Candidates must not have lived, worked, or studied in Belgium for more than 24 months during the three years immediately before the fellowship starts.
The implication is counterintuitive. A Belgian citizen who has spent the past three years working at a university in Japan or Canada may qualify. A researcher from another country who has been based at a Belgian institution for the past two and a half years likely does not.
Residency and activity in Belgium — not passport origin — determine mobility eligibility. Check your own timeline honestly before investing significant preparation time in this application.
Securing a UCLouvain Host
Finding a committed academic host at UCLouvain isn’t optional groundwork. It’s a core part of the application itself.
A technically strong proposal submitted without a genuine institutional commitment from a host unit is unlikely to advance far in the selection process. Reviewers assess the fit between the researcher, the project, and the UCLouvain environment as a combined package.
When reaching out to potential supervisors, include:
- A brief academic introduction
- A concise version of your project idea
- Your CV and publication record
- A specific explanation of why their research group fits your project
- What value the collaboration would bring to both parties
Generic emails sent to large numbers of professors rarely produce serious responses. Target the right people, personalize the outreach, and start these conversations well before September.
On Publications and Research Record
There is no published minimum number of journal articles for this fellowship.
Reviewers are more likely to assess the quality and relevance of your work than the length of your publication list. Research independence, methodological depth, contribution to collaborative publications and the credibility of your proposed trajectory all carry weight.
For applicants earlier in their postdoctoral careers, the research proposal becomes even more important. Use it to show originality and technical skill rather than relying on number of papers to make your case.
What a Strong Proposal Actually Needs to Answer
The proposal has one job: convince reviewers that this project, this researcher, and this institution form a coherent and valuable combination.
Three questions should be answerable within the first few pages:
- Why this project? What specific research problem are you addressing, and why does it matter?
- Why UCLouvain? What does this institution offer that makes it the right environment for this work?
- Why now? What makes this the right moment in your career and in the field to pursue it?
Keep the scope realistic. A fellowship lasting 12 to 36 months cannot deliver a decade’s worth of research outcomes. Define a focused problem, a credible methodology, achievable outputs, and a clear role for the host unit.
The proposal should also show what the fellowship will do for your career trajectory — not just what the project will produce.
The Selection Process
Applications pass through multiple stages before 15 candidates are selected.
The process is expected to include:
- Eligibility screening
- Institutional preselection at UCLouvain
- International peer review
- Final interview stage
A strong CV may clear the first two stages. Peer reviewers and interviewers will focus more heavily on scientific quality, project feasibility, host environment suitability, expected impact, and the applicant’s future research potential.
No single impressive element carries the whole application. Candidates need to perform consistently across every stage.
